At the stage of active job search, some specialists receive several offers at once and have a choice. But is it worth flaunting this fact in the next interview? How to answer the recruiter’s question about whether you are considering other job offers?

Why is this being asked?
First of all, we’ll look at why recruitment managers ask this question.
Firstly, your answer gives the recruiter the opportunity to find out how much time he has left to consider your candidacy and present it to your potential leader. For example, if a candidate interesting to the company says that he has another employment option and the answer should be given in a week, then the employer should worry to speed up all recruiting procedures and quickly put up his job offer.
Secondly, a competent and experienced recruiter can, based on the candidate’s response, replenish information on his motivation and professional interests. So, if a candidate for an accountant’s position says that a company is ready to invite her to the position of a PR manager, a recruiter may have reasonable doubts for the purposes of such an applicant: what is really interesting for a girl - finances or public relations?
Thirdly, information about how to motivate an interesting candidate for a company is significant for a recruiter. For example, the applicant says that he has a good offer, but sometimes he will need to work there on weekends, which is not in his interests. For such a candidate, the balance of work and personal achievements is especially important, therefore, he can be attracted to his side by an adequate work schedule, if, of course, the employer has such an opportunity.
Finally, according to the candidate’s response, the recruiter can assess his demand on the labor market and indirectly conclude that his salary expectations are adequate. If the applicant has been searching for work for several months, but says that there are no suitable offers, then it is likely that he is either not a very good specialist, or his salary expectations are clearly overstated. However, experts specify that each case is individual.

How to answer the recruiter’s question about the offers of other employers?
Do not pretend to be a star for which all city recruiters hunt without exception. “I am known as an excellent specialist, I have many offers, everyone promises a high salary and is even ready to provide a separate office,” if in reality this is not so, an experienced recruiter will probably recognize your fraud.
Experts also do not recommend belittling their abilities, telling the recruiter in paints how difficult it is to find a “woman with a child”, “a specialist for 40” or an inexperienced graduate. Remember: the words that you have difficulty finding a job can negatively affect the assessment of your professional qualities, and therefore the amount of salary that you will be offered.
And yet, in answering this question, do not be fooled, it is better to proceed from the real situation. If you have a job offer, tell the recruiter directly what time frame you need to make a decision. And if a vacancy in a company seems more interesting to you than already available offers, be sure to mention this and explain why. “I was offered the position of a customer service manager at a Russian bank, and I must make a decision by the beginning of next week. But it would be more interesting for me to work with you - I would like to master international banking standards, apply knowledge of English ”, - such an answer will completely satisfy the personnel manager of a foreign bank and give him a signal that he does not have much time to consider the candidate and make a decision.
At the same time, you should not name specific firms and organizations to which you are invited. Firstly, this way you will not become an involuntary informant about what is happening in a competing company. And secondly, the world is small, and the recruiter may well be familiar with his colleague who has already made you an offer - why risk a real job-offer? Limit yourself to the general description: “a small company for installing plastic windows”, “the editorial board of a glossy magazine for women”, “design company - startup”, “large agricultural holding”, etc.
Experts do not advise speaking negatively about those who made you an offer. “They offer to go to work in a publishing house next week, but they have poor marketing, and it’s not interesting for me, especially for a small salary,” this answer is not only unethical, but also tells the recruiter that he is an expert who is not ready to overcome difficulties.

If there are no offers yet, explain to the recruiter that it is not at all your lack of demand. “I just started looking for work, this is my first job interview, so there are no job offers yet,” “I do not advertise my job search because I have not quit. And since searches are inactive, there are no offers yet, ”such explanations will make it clear to the employer that the absence of a job offer in your case does not indicate your lack of professionalism.
However, the most frank answer is also able to benefit you - the recruiter will appreciate your honesty. “I’m not very lucky yet: I’ve been looking for a job for about a month, but it hasn’t come to a concrete offer,” if you are confident in your abilities and see that the companies are interesting, allow yourself not to be cunning. If your experience is of interest to a recruiter, then such frankness will only benefit a career.
