How Facebook Interest Targeting Works

So, in a social network, preferences of FB users are divided into categories such as “Business and industry”, “Education”, “Family and relationships”, “Food and drinks”, “Hobbies and activities”, “News and entertainment” and many others . In different accounts, they differ depending on what information a person has provided about himself through interaction with a social network. That is, interests are based on, for example, which pages he marks as liked or by which advertisements he clicks.

However, the actions of users do not always coincide with their real interests. And the interest categories themselves are very vague. For example, how can you find the most targeted customer by targeting Digital Marketing? Yes, a person could click on an advertisement or like some page from this category. However, there are many reasons for such actions (for example, a random click or ordinary curiosity without much interest).

On the "Advertising Preferences" page in the "Interests" category, you, as a user and recipient of advertising, can delete those items for which you do not want to see ads. By the way, you can remove all interests, but this will not mean that no one can show you ads. You just won’t see ads that might be of use to you.

Yes, Facebook is honest and transparent to users. But he also makes it clear that the targeting algorithm is completely far from ideal. If you have a rather old account and you are an active user of the FB, then in "Advertising Preferences" you may see dozens or even hundreds of interests. Our experience indicates that not all of them are relevant: some do not at all correspond to the true needs of the user, some are outdated. Of course, there are some of them that hit exactly on target. However, the likelihood of reaching a non-target audience with interest targeting is too high.

Interest targeting, if you still use it, should not be the ultimate goal. Otherwise, you can drain the budget, especially if you have little experience with this advertising tool. However, although interests are not the best tool for targeted advertising, he has a future. And that's why.

FB recently announced about deep text. This is an algorithm that shapes the interests of users based on what they write on social networks. The developers claim that he will be able to understand human language with almost the same accuracy as people do.

According to them, the algorithm analyzes as slang, similar or synonymous words, context. For example, if you want to watch the movie "Chocolate", then DeepText will not offer you to buy sweets to order.

It is a self-learning system that is still young and imperfect. However, in terms of its technology, Facebook today is worthy of competing with giants such as Google and Microsoft, so perhaps it has a chance of success in the future. In the meantime, you have to be content with what is.


Interest targeting is an algorithm that is far from ideal. If you are still going to use it, then use it only as the first step in finding an interested audience, and choose retargeting as the second. At the same time, keep in mind that in inexperienced hands, “interests” on Facebook cause the budget to drain to minus. After such unsuccessful experiments, novice advertisers abandon the study of this traffic source, although in fact it can be very effective.

How to delete a Facebook account

Please note, if you delete your account from the social network, your time axis will immediately disappear from Facebook. Other users will not be able to find you, although some data, such as messages you sent, may still be displayed to some people. Information in the feed, such as friends, photos, interests, etc., will be saved in case you return to Facebook.

If you believe that you will no longer use Facebook, you can request complete account deletion.
