Regardless of knowledge of foreign languages or non-possession, in the resume, as a rule, this information is indicated. How to write language skills in a resume? You can use the following understandable gradation:

  • Basic / Initial
  • Reading with a dictionary / Reading professional literature
  • Intermediate / Conversational / I can take an interview
  • Free / Perfect
  • Native

Some use the concepts of "basic" and "conversational" as equivalent. In our opinion, this is not entirely legitimate. Spoken - this means you can explain on everyday topics. Basic is knowledge of the basics, simplest constructions, limited vocabulary.

English Proficiency Levels

The following gradation is most often used to indicate the level of English proficiency:

Elementary / Basic / Beginner - basic, with a dictionary, the basics of the language. In practice, more often than not, this means that you once studied English at school, remember some common phrases, but practically never used English.

Pre-intermediate - just above the base. You can express in simple phrases using facial expressions and gestures. You will understand what is written in the letter in English, but you will most likely be able to compose your letter using the dictionary.

Intermediate - An average level of English proficiency. Do not be afraid to speak English, build simple language constructs. The vocabulary is small, but sufficient to explain in a simple way. In the professional field, Intermediate means that you can write a letter in English, don’t be confused to speak English, you can solve typical problems using the English language without going into subtleties.

Upper-intermediate - A confident level of English proficiency. Usually this is the real level of a graduate of the faculty of foreign languages (although, most of the graduates write that they have Advanced or Fluent). This level implies that you are fluent in speaking, have a fairly rich vocabulary. But at the same time, you can not own professional terminology, make minor mistakes in speech. For most work related to the use of English, an Upper-Intermediate level will be sufficient.

Advanced / Fluent - fluency in English. You can easily use both oral and written English; you can simultaneously translate from / into English. This is the level required by a translator.

Another possible classification that you may come across (moreover, it can be used for any language, not necessarily English):

  • A1 - Beginner / Elementary
  • A2 - elementary
  • IN 1 - Pre-Intermediate
  • IN 2 - Upper-Intermediate
  • C1 - Advanced 1
  • C2 - Advanced 2 (Proficiency)

This is a single European system, which is not very well known in Russia, but, nevertheless, is widely used in the world.

German Proficiency Levels

For German, the following accepted division can be used:

  • Grundstufe (Anfänger) - entry level (A)
  • Mittelstufe Intermediate Level (B)
  • Oberstufe (Fortgeschritten) - free, close to carrier (C)

You can also use the above European classification (A1, A2, B1, etc.)

French Proficiency Levels

For the French language, you can also use the European classification, or use the gradation below (the correspondence of each level of the European classification is indicated.

  • Débutant (F1) - A1
  • Pré-Intermédiaire (F2) - A2
  • Intermédiaire (F3) - B1
  • Intermédiaire-Supérieur (F4) - B2
  • Pré-Avancé (F5) - C1
  • Avancé (F6) - C1
  • Supérieur (F7) - C2
  • Supérieur (F8) - C2

Spanish Proficiency Levels

For Spanish, the following classification is used (the correspondence of the level of level A, B, C is indicated):

  • Nivel Inicial (Espa 1) - A1
  • Nivel Elemental (Espa 2) - A2
  • Nivel Pre-Intermedio (Espa 3) - B1
  • Nivel Intermedio (Espa 4) - B2
  • Nivel Avanzado (Espa 5) - C1
  • Nivel Superior (Espa 6) - C2

Or you can use a single European classification.

1. What is a resume and why is it needed?

If you still do not quite understand what a resume is, I suggest giving it a definition:

Summary - this is brief self-written presentation of your professional skills, achievements and personal qualities that you plan to successfully implement at your future job in order to receive compensation for them (for example, in the form of money or another type of compensation)

In the past, I myself had to write a resume when applying for a job. Indeed, without this, not a single employer will even know about you and your professional skills.

I remember when I sat down to write my resume for the first time, it took me a lot of time to correctly compose and execute it according to all standards. And since I like to understand everything thoroughly, I studied the question of writing it very deeply. To do this, I talked with professional personnel specialists and studied a large number of articles on the topic.

Now I know how to write a resume correctly and will gladly share this with you.

I share with you samples of my resumes, which I personally wrote for myself:

(you can download them for free)

Due to the fact that I was able to write professional resumes, I never had difficulty finding a job. Therefore my knowledge is reinforced practical experience and are not a dry academic theory.

So what is the secret to writing a good resume? Read about it below.

Test results

If you have passed the standardized test for knowledge of a foreign language, be sure to indicate the points obtained for it. For English, it’s TOEFL (USA), IELTS (United Kingdom). For German - Dsh. For French - DELF, DALF. For Spanish - DELE.

2. How to write a resume - 10 simple steps

Before moving on to the steps I want you to remember 3 main rules for successful resume writing:

Rule number 1. Write the truth, but not all

Focus on your strengths and not mention your weaknesses strongly. You will be asked about them at the interview, be prepared for this.

Rule number 2. Adhere to a clear structure

The resume is written on 1-2 sheets, no more. Therefore, try to summarize in it all the necessary information, even if there is a lot of it.

Take care of the neat formatting of the resume text, its structured presentation. Since no one is pleased to read abracadabra.

Rule number 3. Be optimistic and cheerful

Positive people attract success. In your case, a new job.

So, we now turn to the structure of compiling a resume.

Step 1. Resume title

Here you must write the word "Summary" and indicate who it is written on.

All this is written in one line.

For example: Summary Ivanov Ivan Ivanovich

Then your potential employer will immediately understand who owns the resume. For example, before that you called a company that interests you in order to find out if this vacancy is still open for them. They gave you a positive answer and were asked to send a resume.

At the end of the first step, your resume will look like this:

Step 2. Purpose of the resume

It must be remembered that your resume must have a goal. Correctly formulate it as follows (phrase):

The purpose of the resume is an accountant position

Since at that moment you are called that way - the job seeker, that is, a person who is looking for work, potentially applying for it.

At the end of the second step, your resume will look like this:

Step 3. The applicant and his data

At this point, you must write the following:

  • date of birth
  • address,
  • contact number,
  • e-mail
  • marital status.

At the end of the third step, your resume should look like this:

Step 4. Education

If you have several entities, then write them in order.

Moscow State University, 2005-2010,

Specialty: accountant (bachelor)

Moscow State University, 2007—2013,

Specialty: translator in the field of professional communication (bachelor)

At this point, your resume should look like this:

Step 5. Experience

Please note that the column “work experience” is written in the resume starting from the last place of your work, if it is not the only one, and begins with the period spent in this position.

June 2010 — March 2014, Caspian Sea LLC,

Position: chief accountant's assistant,

October 2007 — December 2009, LLC “Dawn”,

Position: accountant

So we have already written half of the summary, it should look like this:

Step 6. Responsibilities

This paragraph in the resume is not always required if the vacancy that you apply for is quite common, and you held a similar position in your previous job.

Sometimes this item can be included in the previous one by writing your duties immediately after the post.

Step 7. Achievements at Previous Jobs

The item “Achievements” is one of the most important in the resume! He is much more important than education and even work experience.

Your potential employer wants to know what exactly he will pay you wages for. Therefore, it is very important to mention when writing a resume about all the significant achievements in previous jobs. At the same time, note that it is correct to write in words, which are the so-called "markers" for personnel officers who are considering your resume.

For example, write correctly:

  • increased 30 percent sales in 6 months
  • developed and introduced a new technology into production,
  • cut equipment maintenance costs by 40%.

  • worked on increasing sales,
  • took part in a project to create a new technology,
  • reduced equipment costs.

As you can see, it is also important to write specific numbers, as they very clearly reflect the essence of your achievements.

Now your resume looks something like this:

Step 8. Additional Information

Here you need to describe your strengths, professional knowledge and skills that will directly help you better and better fulfill the tasks assigned to you at your new job.

Usually they write the following here:

  1. Computer skills and special programs. This is true for office workers and employees whose direct work is connected with a PC. For example, for designers, accountants, programmers, office managers.
  2. Foreign language skills. If your future work involves reading, translating or communicating in a foreign language and you know it to a certain extent, be sure to write about it. For example: English spoken.
  3. The presence of a car and driving skills. If your work involves business trips and you often have to drive a car, for example, working as a sales representative, you should indicate the presence of your car, as well as the category of driver’s license and length of service.

Thus, in additional information, along with computer skills and a foreign language, write: there is a personal car, category B, 5 years of experience.

Step 9. Personal qualities

There is no need to describe too many qualities, especially if they are not related to your future work. You can be a kind and sympathetic person, loving children and respecting your friends, but it will not be interesting for a potential employer to read about your “cordiality” and rich inner world.

For example, if you pretend to be an accountant, it’s good to write here: self-discipline, attentiveness, punctuality, efficiency, mathematical mindset, the ability to analyze.

If you are applying for a more creative profession, say a designer or creator, then you should indicate here: a developed creative imagination, a sense of style, a non-standard view of the problem, healthy perfectionism.

Step 10. Recommendations from the previous place of work

It will be very nice if at the end of the resume you mention the full name and the positions of your former managers, and also indicate their contact numbers so that your potential employer or his representative can verify your professionalism by receiving feedback about you from your former direct managers.

To do this, I recommend that you contact them in advance and notify them that they can be called and asked to briefly describe you as a specialist, and just a person.

Even if your potential employer does not call your former leaders, the mere fact of having contacts for recommendations will significantly increase his confidence in you.

At the very end of the resume, you must indicate the time frame you are ready to start work, here you can also indicate the desired level of pay.

The final view of your resume:

Congratulations! Your resume is 100% ready!

Employment sites are misleading

In the process of compiling a resume, I often have to look at a resume for different positions. I often see strange descriptions of knowledge of foreign languages.

Here I will give several controversial options on how to describe the degree of proficiency in a foreign language in a resume.

For example, here is what the site hh.ru suggests choosing in the English column:

  • I do not own.
  • Basic knowledge.
  • I read professional literature.
  • I can take an interview.
  • Speak fluently.

Website rabota.ru suggests choosing the level of English language proficiency from the following options:

In general, each site introduces its own scale, instead of using international standards. And people themselves sometimes ornately describe their skills. This confuses both job seekers and employers. Just only to those who do not know the language at all or speak it fluently.

Below I will give the generally accepted degrees of knowledge of foreign languages in a summary, and this will allow you to write correctly about your knowledge.

English proficiency and knowledge levels for resumes

Russia has adopted an international system for designating knowledge of the English language, so I recommend using it.

Proficiency in German or Spanish for CV

To indicate knowledge of German or Spanish, the European standard is suitable.

European level scale

French proficiency and knowledge levels for CV

Both scales can be used to describe French language proficiency, but preferably international.

Avancé (F6)
Avancé-Supérieur (F7)C2, Mastery in perfection
Supérieur (F8)

General recommendations

Since it is impossible to describe standards for all foreign languages, I will try to give general short recommendations.

  • Always learn the language standards. Use the internet actively.
  • Describe your language skills in your own words and additionally Indicate your level according to well-known or national standards.
  • Pay attention to the wording in your resume.

What to choose from

It’s difficult to pick up some “typical” skills. Indeed, each profession has its own requirements and the applicant must meet them. If you do not know what exactly you can write, then you can specify the following:

  • interpersonal business communication skills,
  • ability to organize work, plan, make decisions,
  • attention to various nuances and details,
  • the ability to analyze problems, effectively look for ways to solve them,
  • flexibility
  • project management skills
  • business leadership.

But still, it is desirable to select skills depending on the requirements for candidates. Usually the employer himself indicates what he wants from the future employee. The applicant can simply rephrase his requirements and indicate them in key skills.

Leadership Skills

First of all, understanding what key skills are for resumes is important for those who apply for the position of leader. Increased demands are always made on potential managers and their candidatures are scrutinized more carefully.

As skills, you can specify the following skills:

  • resolve conflicts
  • to plan and optimally organize the work process,
  • make decisions and answer for their results independently,
  • think critically
  • effectively manage time and subordinate people,
  • apply motivational programs,
  • think strategically and creatively,
  • negotiate,
  • communication skills, the ability to gain the trust of colleagues, partners and senior management.

It is important to be able to distinguish your skills from personal qualities. The former are acquired in the process of work and training, and the latter characterize you as a person.

You can also add multitasking to the list, the ability to adapt to various conditions, delegate part of the authority and monitor the proper implementation of tasks.

Communication professions

Separately, it is worth noting what skills should be indicated if you apply for the position of seller, manager or consultant. For example, you can specify the following skills of a sales assistant in a resume:

  • ability to manage time
  • experience of personal communication and successful sales,
  • competent spoken language, well-posed voice, necessary diction,
  • creative approach to sales,
  • ability to listen, give competent advice, find an approach to customers,
  • the ability to quickly learn and easily perceive large amounts of information,
  • skills of serving people, ability to show tact and tolerance.

If you know that the company works with foreign customers, then an indisputable advantage will be the knowledge of foreign languages. When applying for a job as a sales manager, also indicate if this, of course, is true:

  • knowledge of English, Italian, French or another language,
  • confident use of a PC, knowledge of MS Office programs,
  • business correspondence skills, including in a foreign language,
  • ability to show attention, interest, friendliness.

But for teachers, teachers, leading seminars and trainings, slightly different requirements are imposed. They should have the following skills:

  • motivation for learning outcomes,
  • high energy and initiative,
  • the ability to concentrate the attention of a group of people and hold it for a certain time,
  • the acquired skills of patience and flexibility, which must be shown when communicating with students,
  • the ability to plan and competently organize the work process.

Common to all these professions is the main skill - to establish contact with people.

Other options

Choosing the right skills for technicians is no less simple. The main task, for example, for a system administrator is to monitor the operation of the entire computer network. Therefore, he must possess such key skills:

  • Diagnose professional equipment
  • monitor possible risks and plan ways to restore the functioning of systems in the shortest possible time,
  • fluent in technical English,
  • work with large volumes of information.

The indicated necessary skills for this position show how the specificity of the work affects what needs to be indicated in the resume. Separately, it is worth noting that in some industries, professional skills are so closely intertwined that it is difficult to separate them.

If you are applying for the position of accounting specialist, then it is better to familiarize yourself with the requirements first. Examples of key skills in a resume for an accountant can be taken directly from the description of the requirements for candidates. They have to:

  • be able to think analytically,
  • organize work on a fixed area,
  • analyze problems, be able to look for ways to solve them,
  • Plan correctly
  • pay enough attention to the little nuances and important details,
  • prioritize correctly
  • be able to work with a large number of documents,
  • be able to highlight the primary tasks
  • have the skills to work with regulatory authorities.

For employees of the legal department put forward slightly different requirements. For a lawyer, you can specify:

  • knowledge of legislation, principles of the judicial system,
  • ability to draw up documents, contracts,
  • skills in analyzing legal documents,
  • the ability to work with a variety of information and quickly acquire it,
  • knowledge of computer, MS Office programs,
  • communication skills,
  • ability to use legal bases presented in electronic form,
  • multi-vector (ability to work in different directions),
  • skills to work with clients and employees of regulatory authorities,
  • ability to work with documents,
  • ability to organize work and plan tasks.

Each specialty should have its own skills, but you can choose something suitable for your future work from all the presented lists.

An additional help in finding the right and appropriate characteristics can be such a reflection: imagine yourself a leader who needs an employee for the position you are interested in. What would you expect from a job candidate?
