1. Remove the old handles from the steering wheel.

2. Thoroughly clean the steering wheel (clips) and throttle stick with a special cleaner or alcohol.

3. Moisten the steering wheel and the inside of the left handle (the one with the smaller inner diameter) with soapy water or alcohol. Do not use oil or white spirit, as the handles will not be able to lock onto the steering wheel due to the oil film.

4. By force and slightly twisting pull the handle on a wheel. Make sure the handle is fully installed.

5. Repeat steps 3-4 for the right handle.

6. Do not use the motorcycle for 24 hours, so that the handles are completely dry and secured to the handlebars. For racing use, especially in wet weather, use compressed air for quick drying after installation, as well as a fixing wire in 2-3 places along each handle.

7. If special glue is supplied with the handles, use it as follows. Starting from the side of the gas handle, apply glue at a distance of 70-75mm from the end of the steering wheel (from the weight), as well as on the inner surface of the installed handle. Set the handle halfway and wipe off any excess glue, then complete the installation of the handle. Carefully remove excess glue. Repeat with the other handle.

The purpose of the handle on the steering wheel ("lazy people")

Already on the first cars, the drive of the steered wheels was implemented using a steering wheel or a rotary handle, and today this solution has not lost its relevance. However, the steering wheel has both advantages and some disadvantages. For example, even a small steering wheel is quite difficult to quickly shift from side to side when performing active maneuvers in a limited space. And it’s impossible to blame drivers for this difficulty - even experienced drivers do not always successfully cope with this task!

The maneuvering problem has long been solved by the designers of loaders and special equipment working in warehouses, port territories and in other limited spaces. The problem is solved by adding a small part to the steering wheel - a rotary handle, or, as it is popularly called, “lazy people”. Over time, the handle migrated to the steering wheels of cars, mainly trucks.

Why does the handle on the steering wheel help in maneuvering? It's simple: installing the “lazy guy” on the steering wheel gives a convenient point of support and application of force, which allows you to quickly turn the steering wheel with one hand. The pen solves several problems at once:

  • Helps you drive with just one hand
  • Accelerates the process of turning the steering wheel and wheels, reducing maneuver time,
  • Prevents confusion in the hands when throwing them on the steering wheel (which is especially important for inexperienced drivers, as well as for people of high stature),
  • Facilitates the process of maneuvering even a bulky car in a limited space.

"Lazy" has a number of operating features - they are described in detail below.

Handlebar design and features

For a long time the handles on the steering wheel, identical in design and principle, have been used. A typical lazy dog consists of three main parts:

  • Clamp with fasteners for mounting the handle on the steering wheel,
  • Hand grip
  • Bearing connecting the handle and clamp.

For the most part, modern handles are equipped with a sealant, which is inserted into the clamp to fix the accessory or adjust the diameter of the steering wheel rim.

Handles can be divided into two large groups according to the method of fixing on the steering wheel:

  • “Classic” - the clamp is clamped with a bolt or screw, which is screwed directly into the bottom of the handle,
  • Modern - the clamp is clamped with a screw (usually a hexagon), for which its own thread is provided.

At the same time, in classic “lazy dogs” the handle is always located on the side of the steering wheel (since it is impossible to screw the bolt otherwise), and in modern type accessories, the handle can be positioned differently on the side or directly above the steering wheel rim. In this case, all the clamps can be of two sizes - 33 and 43 mm, however, with the help of sealing inserts they can be adjusted within wide limits.

Also, pens can be divided into two categories by type of clamp:

  • Standard narrow clamp
  • A wide clamp covering a sector of the steering wheel rim.

The handles of the first type are the simplest, but due to the small area of contact with the steering wheel with weak clamping or strong impact can slip. The handles of the second type hold more reliably and withstand heavy loads without consequences.

As for the pens themselves, there is a huge variety of shapes, sizes and designs. The simplest round handles are most common, however, triangular shaped handles (with rounded corners), drop-shaped or spherical, and others are used. The wound also has handles with the ability to adjust the tilt and position of the handle. Such a variety allows you to choose a “lazy person” for the interior design of the car or just to your taste.

Installation and proper use of handles on the steering wheel

Before you make a purchase on the steering wheel, you need to understand the consequences of this choice. Typically, traffic police do not pay attention to the presence of a handle, especially for trucks. However, in fact, the presence of a “lazy person” violates paragraph 2.2 of the “List of malfunctions and conditions under which the operation of vehicles is prohibited” of the SDA of the Russian Federation. That is, this accessory is an unintended design of the car assembly. Inspection with a handle on the steering wheel will not be possible, so it is recommended to dismantle it in such situations.

Mounting the handle on the steering wheel should begin by choosing the place where it will work most efficiently. Three options are possible here:

  • In the places of the recommended hand grip by hands - for 10 and 2 hours,
  • In the lower sectors of the steering wheel - for 8 and 4 hours,
  • In the upper sector of the steering wheel.

The first option is most convenient from the point of view of the grip of the handle, but in this position the “lazy person” can be inconvenient during normal taxiing. Therefore, if the handle is used infrequently, then you should refuse to install it in these places.

The second option is most convenient in the sense that the handle will not interfere during normal taxiing. However, this arrangement is not entirely convenient in terms of the correct distribution of forces. For example, if the handle is set for 8 hours, then turning to the right (if the driver is right-handed) will require first pushing the handle (bending the arm at the elbow), and only then pull it toward you. Although in modern cars with power steering this is not a big problem.

The third option combines the advantages and disadvantages of both of the previous methods. Such an installation is rarely resorted to, and only if this position is really convenient for the driver.

When installing the “idler”, it is necessary to adjust the size of the clamp to the diameter of the steering wheel rim using gaskets. With the correct selection of the thickness of the seal, the handle after tightening the bolt or screw should not slide on the steering wheel and deviate during use.

Operation of the handle on the steering wheel is not difficult, but requires some precautions. The design of the steering wheel is designed in such a way that during a sharp turn due to the wheel hitting an obstacle or for another reason, do not injure your fingers. The presence of a “lazy dog” increases the risk of injuries to fingers and hands - during movement this can lead to loss of control of the car by the driver and to an accident.

But in general, the handle for the steering wheel is a convenient and simple accessory that helps drivers in difficult situations, saves their time and energy.

How to remove old pens

Before changing flu, you need to pull them off the bar, the easiest and most popular way to remove them is soap solution and a syringe.

An old handle is punctured along the perimeter with a needle, an aqueous soap solution or liquid soap is poured into the internal cavity, after which it can be pulled or twisted from the steering wheel.

This method is only suitable for soft rubber nozzles, it is better to pull off plastic or leather handles with a solvent.

The second method of removal: pry a flat screwdriver under the handle and pour solvent into the inner area, after which it will easily slide off the surface of the rod (if this does not happen, fill the solvent again).

You can remove the handle with clamps as follows: unscrew the clamps with a hexagon, pull off the attached plastic plugs, pull the handle to its side and pull it off with one jerk. This method requires considerable physical effort.

Also, the handles can simply be cut with a razor or an office knife: make one or more cuts along the entire length and tighten.

After the old nozzle has been removed, thoroughly clean the rod from dirt, dry it and only then proceed with the installation of new handles.

How to tension new nozzles

At the beginning, check the handles by diameter, they should fit the size of the rod (22-23 mm), the denser the handle is put on, the less likely it will slip.

It is most convenient to install the handles with cable ties for the direction of movement, start pulling on the steering wheel with ties, pulling them out after installation.

Handles with retainer rings are easily stretched and bolted. This model is the most optimal, it holds well and does not scroll during operation.

Simple flu is established with alcohol or soapy water, so a sliding moment is created and it can easily be pulled onto the bar.

The disadvantage of this method is that the handle can scroll, then it must be removed, dried and pulled again.

The rigid rubber model should be steamed in boiling water or a hairdryer before installation. You can use the bike only after the flu has completely dried.

To prevent the grips from getting out of the steering wheel, they are secured with grips, special plugs that will protect the parts from mechanical damage.

What to do if the handles turn?

If the handles scroll or loose, dirt or water gets under them - they must be removed, the surface of the rod must be dried, the diameter of the parts accurate to the nearest millimeter, and only then installed on the steering wheel again.

For a tighter fixation, you can apply Moment glue to the surface of the rod before installation.

But this method is not reliable, since during operation the handles can fly off, it is better to carefully select the sizes before buying an accessory.

Steering wheel rubber band

Grips are usually not installed on a road bike; special rubber windings for the steering wheel are used for a comfortable and long ride.

  1. First of all (so as not to interfere with the process) brake cables are fixed,
  2. Each side of the rod is wrapped in different directions: on and against the clock (left - to the right, right - to the left),
  3. In sets with a professional winding, there is always a separate piece of tape for fixing the palms of the hands during the trip,
  4. The fixing fabric is laid under the brake mechanism: a narrow ribbon is wrapped in the shape of a figure of eight, a wide ribbon creates excess volume on the steering wheel, so when wrapping it is necessary to check and not to wind too large a piece,
  5. The main winding on one side of the tape is impregnated with self-adhesive impregnation for fixation: with the adhesive side make several circles at the edge of the steering wheel, then continue to wind the tape tightly pressing it to the bar,
  6. Thus wrap the entire steering wheel including the area with the brake lever,
  7. After winding, cut off excess with a knife.

Long soft tips are available for road bikes, but before choosing grips, you should clarify the installation methodology: basically, the installation of grips on a road bike is carried out in bicycle workshops.

Therefore, if you plan to independently replace the handles, it is better to use a wrapping tape.

Grips is the main part of a bicycle handlebar; it is necessary to approach the choice of a product as responsibly as to any other transport part.

The material of manufacture should be selected taking into account the characteristics of the ride, so that during operation there are no problems.
