Useful Tips

Fast start

Are you annoyed by red eyes in digital photos? This problem can be solved in just a few simple steps. In this article, we will tell you how to edit failed photos and make the red-eye effect less noticeable.

  1. 1 Download and install The Gimp 2.x, if you do not already have it. If you use Microsoft Windows, the installer must also install “GTK +”, but if you decide to build the programs from the sources, you must take care of installing “GTK +” yourself.
  2. 2 Open the red-eye photo in Gimp.
  3. 3 Go to the "Layers, Channels, Paths" window. To do this, go to "Dialog"> "Create a new panel"> "Layers, Channels, Paths."
  4. 4 Go to the “Channels” tab (green, blue and red blocks) and uncheck the boxes “green” and “blue”, click on the name so that the background remains gray and white, eyes should remain red.

5 Go to the main Gimp window and select the Burn / Dodge tool. Select the Burnout and Lighting options. Exposure should be set between 25 and 50.

6 Choose a small brush, it depends on the size of the eye. Usually the ideal size for this tool is 5x5 - 9x9, but it happens in different ways, it all depends on the size of the eyes in the photo.

7 Enlarge the image. The magnification level depends on the image size and eye size, so that the eyes occupy a large part of the window, make an increase from 70% to 90%.

  • 8 Carefully place points around the reddened elements of the eyes, thereby slightly reducing the saturation of red.
  • 9 Restore the original size of the photo to assess how much you have changed the color of red eyes, perhaps the photo still needs to be corrected.
  • 10 Sit back and enjoy your work!
  • Manual red-eye correction

Open a photo that needs red eye correction.

Increase her Magnifier(Tools - Magnifier)take a tool "Free allocation", in its settings, set the shading of the edges in 2-4 writers. Highlight the redness in the eyes, stepping back from her 1-2 pixels.

Take the tool "Tint"(Color - Tint). And set the appropriate values. I chose these:

Having done the same with the second eye, you will get the desired result.

    Semi-automatic red-eye correction

Ghimp has a filter that helps remove red eyes from photos.

After opening a photograph in which a person has red eyes, you need to select the cornea in any convenient way (I chose "Elliptical selection").

After creating the selection, go to Filters - Improvement - Remove red eye. " and select the desired setting. I chose the value 65.

After this, you need to highlight the second eye. The intensity of the red-eye effect in one person in one photo is usually the same, so you can simply repeat the filter with the previous settings (Ctrl + F).

If necessary (for example, you often have to remove red-eye from photos), you can set a hotkey combination for this filter.

That's all. I think now you will not have difficulty with red eye removal on the picture.
